In a nutshell...
Super Shoes are a type of... err, I would say "species", but they tend to identify as "items" as they're a type of Power Up. If they were a species, they could be closely related to a Plushcritter or other type of Golem.
Basically, they're a type of sentient shoes that have a variety of powers that they grant to anyone that wears them for a certain period of time. There are a lot of subtypes to this item, as Super Shoes is more a collective term.
Specs and Details
Materials & Components
Super Shoes are made up of a variety of materials, each depending on their function and usually relating to their name. For instance, one subtype is Work Walkers (which are for protection from hazardous materials), a pair of boots that are made of tough materials, including steel toes and heels, where as another subtype would be Puffer Pads (which allow jumping high and landing from very high heights) are made up of a cushion-y, almost elastic material.
Regardless, people that have had the opportunity to make use of them have stated that they're "actually really comfy/cozy". Even if they're not initially in the hosts correct shoe size, they seem to fit perfectly and change dimension and shape to accommodate for the host.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
Even though they can be vastly different in function (see Subtypes below for more details on some of the more known ones), they all follow the same kind of idea. A user or "host" puts the shoes on, the shoes share their latent power with the host and after a period of time, the shoes disappear in a number of ways, also depending on what kind of shoes they are. You can usually find them, rather conveniently, located in places where they could be really useful. They might even try to call you over and give 'em a try. It's really kind of odd how they're really willing to help people do things easier, but it can be assured it's not some trick or prank. They're genuinely eager to assist. I'd recommend giving them a try when you see some, as they can be in one place one day, but not there another.
They don't appear to be able to use their powers without a host, but they are capable of speech and moving around on their own via hoping or skating or what-have-you. When they disappear, they seem to reappear where they were before when the host first donned them.
To don a pair of Super Shoes, you can simply walk towards them and put it in your mind that you're walking into the shoes or you can stop and put them on as you think you would.... though folks that like to min-max their time using the shoes may consider just jumping at them with the intent to jump into them. They usually detect your intent behind the way you approach them and are uncanny in their way to snap into position to "catch" you.
Alternatively, if the host chooses to, they can remove the Super Shoes at any time. It seems to work on a "will" bases. For example, if you try to simply jump out of the shoes, thus removing them, you can. Additionally, it doesn't matter if the host has shoes on previously, the Super Shoes work all the same. In fact, when they're put on, it's almost as if the shoes the host were already wearing disappear and the Super Shoes become the worn shoes.
No one knows at all how any of this works. Asking any Super Shoes how it works will likely end up with them saying "it is what it be".
Oddly enough, Super Shoes won't let just anyone put them on. For instance, if you're a 4 year old and you're wanting to put some of the super fast (and potentially dangerous) ones, they'll likely avoid you and say something like "Heyheyhey, not so fast kid. You've gotta learn how to use us first." or if someone who doesn't need them tried to put them on, a lot of the time they'll avoid equipping and say "Now 's not the time to wear us." The logic and reason behind who they let use them or not use them is unknown.
There have been rumors of more "permanent" Super Shoes out there, but no one seems to have a pair... err, "know" a pair... seriously, they're alive, but they insist they're items, so do you "own" a pair or are you "friends with them"...? I digest.
Technology
Like with most Power Ups, it's assumed to be Magic, Flux, Wish, something like that, but it hasn't been determined how they spawn where they do, how long they last or how they're able to do unusual feats and allow their "host" to make use of them.
Typical Use and Function
It's really better you refer to the Subtypes section below for specifics for each type of Super Shoes, but they're typically used in locations and times where they would be most useful. It's actually uncanny how convenient that is, but that's just how Power Ups work.
Manufacturing
Who made them?
Well, when asked, a lot of them talk about The Almighty Cobbler In The Sky making them "since the beginning of time" and that they're "forged by TACITS's golden shoehorn" and that they were scattered amongst the planets, waiting for when their powers are needed most.
...So, we're not sure what they mean.
History
No one is really sure where they come from, but a variety of them have appeared over the years all over the Exstellarverse. As far as their history goes... well, you've probably played or heard of a videogame or comic book hero have super powered boots or something, right? Just look around at those stories and you can see the history of 'em. :P There's a lot of different ones out there with different stories behind 'em.
Subtypes
Puffer Pads
Typically looks like a green and purple sneaker, except puffier. Almost balloon-like both in make and in vibe, making them one of the goofier subtypes of Super Shoes. They're able to puff themselves up to 2 to 3 times their original size. This is how they employ their power: jumping to and landing safely from super high places. Also, really buoyant, but that's not nessicarily part of their power.
Kinetic Kicks
Vroom, vroom! These are sneakers with bright red with yellow and white accents, sporting some exhaust pipes on the sides of them. When worn, they hover just above the ground and are even able to hover on water. They use the propulsion from the pipes and the hover of their bottoms to achieve really high speeds. Takes some practice to use. Will not let younger kids use them.
Work Walkers
Work Walkers are a pair of heavy duty work boots, with metal toes and heels. They protect from hazardous materials and puddles of who-knows-what-but-it-smells-caustic. Should the hazard be particularly deep (or if you simply need more height for some reason), they're able to stretch out really, really long, like a pair of stilts. Don't panic if this happens, your skeleton is just fine when this happens. :P
Sticker Slippers
Slip 'em on and step around. These orange slippers are outfitted with plunger-like suction cups that can be used to walk on walls, ceilings and prevent oneself from sliding around on ice or from high winds or impact from outside sources. Don't underestimate the rest of your body when I say that simply wearing the shoes will make your whole body an immoveable object, if you need to.
Fin Flippers
Interesting set of shoes, these ones. They can be used like normal flippers, but they're also outfitted with twin turbines on the sides of them, installed backwards. Why backwards? Well, think of when you swim... you point your toes down, relative to your body, right? That's why they're backwards! Point your toes, jettison yourself around, do one of those goofy dolphin jumps if you wanna.
Gravity Gunners
Space Shoes! These are interesting and relatively rare, even for Super Shoes. Not only do these shoes let you float around in zero gravity, but if you do a kick, like you're trying to kick something from really far away, it shoot lasers out of the bottom of them. Kick 'n' shoot! Very neon!
4th Wall Break
Inspiration
I was watching a playthrough of Banjo-Tooie with Jay and I realized.... I wanna make shoe-based powerups with personalities attached to them. Y'know, like when you try to use them but you haven't learned to yet, they actually talk to you and are all "Ay, feet out! Not until you learn!" I also took a note from the shoes in Roger Rabbit. Lil dudes deserved better. ^^; I guess ever since, I kinda liked the idea of these power ups that are alive and some kind of equipment, as like a symbiotic friend thing.
